The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry operates a seasonal aquatics research program at the Thousand Island Biological Station (TIBS) on Governor’s Island in Clayton NY. The island is in the upper St. Lawrence River, approximately 15 miles downstream of Eastern Lake Ontario.
The new facility houses eight students and two researchers, supported by office/flex space, three full bathrooms, and a small kitchen adjacent to the lounge/gathering area. The building takes advantage of the island’s natural characteristics and views, and relates functionally to the existing structures, paths and topography. The architectural design is derived from regional and local precedents.
